Character Statements

After Quinton's trial, he was found guilty and told to await sentencing in July. He asked his friends and family if they might be able to write and send in character statements or just things about him that might help lessen his sentence. These are those statements, and I hope that after reading them it might give you some pause when assuming that the male is always guilty in situations like this.

To the Honorable

Judge Bordallo

Your honor,

Hello. I am writing this character reference letter for Petty Officer Quinton Bezon, who has pleaded not guilty to the charges of Criminal Sexual Conduct a Third Degree Felony and Grabbing the Plaintiffs Breast a Misdemeanor.

I am Petty Officer Gregory Duncanson, and  I was Quinton Bezon's Leading Petty Officer onboard the USS Frank Cable. I have known him since July of 2015, and I consider him to be a good friend and an Outstanding Sailor. I was not a witness to the charges being brought against Quinton Bezon, but I can attest to the strength of his character and his honesty.

Quinton Bezon is a person of good moral character. I realize that might be hard to believe, given the circumstances, but it is true nonetheless. He received Blue Jacket of the Quarter and over 20 coin awards from multiple commands for all his hard work.  He has always been kind, generous, and respectful to others, trying to please and help them in any way he can. He always has a positive attitude and tries to cheer others up when they are down. He has a strong sense of duty which he applies to his everyday duties as a sailor, even with everything that is going on he still shows selflessness by striving to train his junior sailors in becoming qualified in all of the qualifications they need to be successful in the Navy. He also possesses a great deal of integrity, and constantly strives to make sure he is doing the right thing. He has always followed the rules that the navy has set forth and the laws of the land, he has never been in trouble at work or out in town.

Quinton Bezon is the type of person that would give you the shirt off his back or buy you lunch without wanting anything in return. This is why when I heard about his situation I was shocked with disbelief. I don’t believe that he did what he is being charged with, or that he is even capable of committing such a horrible act. I don’t see how he could be convicted with the very little evidence of which none is able to be traced back to him.  I know how he is as a person and a worker. He has always been respectful and caring to everyone he interacts with.

I feel strongly about Quinton Bezon's future and if he gets convicted of these charges it will end his promising career in the US Navy.

I know that it must be difficult for you to make decisions like this when you don’t personally know the person standing in front of you, so I hope that you take my letter and the countless others you're receiving into consideration when considering his case.

Very Respectfully,
HT1(SW/AW)Duncanson

Hi my name is Ashley,

I've known Quinton Bezon since I was a little girl. He's become a role model to me. I've always looked up to him. He's nice and caring and never made you do anything you didn't want to.

He's very protective always looked out for me. Never let anybody hurt me. Quinton is 100 % innocent and that trial is 100 % unfair. Quinton treats every women with respect never disrespects them.

I could never see Quinton doing what he's been accused of doing and I've known him pretty much my whole life! Quinton charges should be dropped he does not deserve to do time for a crime he did not do.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Sincerely,
Ashley Milburn.

To whom it may concern,

My name is Brandon Diezman and I am Quinton Bezon's cousin.

Growing up my childhood was pretty rough. A home with broken parents, a change of living, different foster homes, then I moved in with my cousins.

My whole life Quinton was always the role model. Always showing people the right way to do things. Always going to church early every Sunday mornings. He was always trying to better himself and always wanted to have a positive impact on other people's life.

Growing up in a Christian home he had both great parents who was strongly in faith and he also strongly loved god. Quinton has always left a positive mark where he left. He first started working out at Texas Roadhouse in alliance Ohio and became employee of the month a few times, went on to MAC Trailer and exceeded extremely well in his welding trade. His bosses loved him. His family and friends loved him. More importantly he loved himself as a man. I know Quinton knows what's wrong and what's right. He has never hurt no one ever, he only would want to help people, give them advice, be that great friend/role model some people never had.

Thanks, Brandon Diezman.

I met Quinton Bezon when his family started going to Louisville Baptist Temple. Quinton was always a caring person. He hung around my daughter and many other girls from church and never forced himself on any one. We all trusted him around our daughters and still would trust him to this day.

It isn't right that one person can get away with ruining someone's life like what is happening to Quinton. My brother too was also accused of forcing himself on a girl and she was proven to still be a virgin but he still got in trouble because she said so.

This has got to STOP. I would never allow my daughter to lie just to get even with someone for whatever reason. If there is no proof then STOP the madness. No proof means innocent to me.

Thanks For Your Time,

Barb Gordon

To whom it may concern,

I am nobody special but I have know Quinton and his family for years since they started attending the same church I did.

Quinton has always been a good kid. Never in any trouble.

From the day I heard about this I have always believed his innocence.

When determining his sentencing I hope that you take into account the serious lack of evidence & that he's never been in any trouble before.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Sincerely,

Samantha Summerfield

To whom it may concern,

My name is Javier M Aispuro and I served with Quinton Bezon on USS FRANK CABLE (AS-40) from November 2013 to November 2016. I had the opportunity and pleasure of working with him while assigned to Repair Department Hull Division (R-1). While attached to R-1 Division I was a Petty Officer First Class and for 1 1/2 years I was the supervisor of all production of R-1 Division and work hand in hand with Quinton. By Far Quinton made my work easier due to his maturity, character and work ethic. If there one thing I could count on him on was his word. He would never lie to me in any situation. If he messed up or could not meet a deadline he would always be honest and true to the facts.

When I heard that he was in jail, not one time did the thought of him being charge with rape come to my mind. I did not get the opportunity to talk to him while he was in jail, or have any contact with him. When he was finally released I had the opportunity to ask him what happen. He told me that he was charge with rape. He began to tell me his side of what happen that night. From his account of what happen, how the next day went from waking up to cops knocking on the door I believed he was telling the truth.

I would check up on him time to time asking how he was doing and to make sure that he was being helped. I cant imagine what he was going trough. So we would have conversation about how things were going for him in life. Due to the fact that he was not allowed to leave the ship, it was like being on house arrest for him. When he told me the rape kit came back negative I thought well that is it, it's over and all charges will be dropped. Then he said that the put even more charges on him. I began to wonder why this happen. If some one said that they were raped and the rape kit came back negative that would make me question their character.

In my opinion I believe this trail he has been guilty until proven innocent. Quinton has not only been cleared of the original charge of rape or having sex with her, He served jail time for a crime he did not commit. The Navy even restricted him to the ship for well over what most sailors serve for Non-Judicial punishment. During this whole time he has had the best attitude and not one moment did it cross my mind that he did it. I have seen him work with men and woman too and NEVER did one sailor male or female say
they did not want to work with him. I strongly believe that the charges should be dropped.

I trust Quinton with my life and I would trust him to be around any of my family without a doubt one of the best persons I have had the opportunity to work with in my 13 years in the Navy. I hope you truly read this statement and take into consideration what I have to say about him.

Good morning,

I've been following Quinton Bezon's case and he's a good person. I was stationed with Bezon for the last three years and since we've met he has been one of my best buddies that has always been there for me through my tough times and my good times. I went to him for many things and he was always there to help. When the case started i was surprised because as much as I been around him, drunk or sober, there's never been an issue with me or anyone else we were around. He was always looking out for my better well being. He's a great guy and it's unfortunate that he is going through this. I pray that things do get better for him at this horrible time.

Thank you for your time,

Your Honor,

My name is Mark Wells, 2nd class petty officer U.S. Navy veteran.

I have known Quinton Bezon four years since his arrival on Guam, we've worked, traveled, and been there for each other through hardships.

I am aware that Quinton has been in court for criminal sexual conduct charges. I believe he deserves the lowest possible sentencing, he's spent time in prison and house arrest with no issues.

Quinton Bezon has always had the respect and admiration of his peers for his superior work ethic at work, as well as his off duty activities. I still continue to believe in Quinton and trust him in any situation.

Quinton's reputation is that of a strong, level headed leader who would do anything for his family, friends, and crew members. He is a trust worthy man, and is a model of strength and perseverance.

Sincerely,

To Whom It May Concern,
My name Is Michele Von Heldt. I live in Alliance, Ohio. I have known Quinton Bezon since he was in high school. I've watched that boy grow into a respectable young man. He always had after school jobs so he could help his mother out with the bills and younger brothers. He has always been the type of person who thought of others before thinking of himself... That's why he joined the military: so he could serve his country and to make a positive difference in this world.
I've always thought that if I ever had a son, I would want him to be just like Quinton.  He has fought a winning battle to have a good life, just for it to be taken away by these horrible and exaggerated accusations! And now he's going to have to suffer for these accusations for a long time. He does not deserve for this to happen to him at all...

Sincerely,
Michele Von Heldt

My name is Brandon and my wife Allison and I have known Quinton since 2013 where I met him onboard the USS Frank Cable serving in the same division. Through the few years I have known him, he has shown nothing less than pure class in the way he acts and carries himself. He was one of the first ones to show up when my wife gave birth to our daughter Karmyn, and he cared for her like she was one of his own. Quinton is the type of guy who you could call at any time of the night and he'd be there. At work, he always showed professionalism and always put himself last. All in all, it has been a priviledge to share a friendship with him and anybody that truly knew him would feel the same.

Judge Bordallo and/or to whom it may concern,
My name is Bereniz Duncan. I was a witness, and gave my statement in court during the trial of Quinton Bezon. It was an unbiased recount of what happened the night of the incident from my point of view. Now I would like to offer my thoughts to perhaps help paint the picture of who Quinton is, as a friend and family, rather than the villain I've seen him painted as throughout the trial and in local papers.
Prior to the night of the incident, I cannot say I was close friends with Quinton, but I knew him to be a friend of my husbands who was happily engaged, and always amiable whenever we all hung out. The harsh truth is I didn't really get to know him until after this whole situation.
The next few months were very straining, as I'm sure these things always are, and I carried a guilt of what happened. As a woman, if another says they have been sexually assaulted you instinctively want to back them up one hundred percent; but this whole stance gets turned on it's head when you are one that gets pulled into this situation. In my mind things started to not add up, and I questioned everything I believed.
After all that has happened and everything that I have experienced, I cannot go without saying that the Quinton that I have come to know is a person of integrity and respectability. I am not saying that he is incapable of making mistakes, but that he is not one to cross lines and boundaries set. In a grey situation such as this, I can only voice my own thoughts. So I want to put forward that it's hard for me to stomach that someone can claim they are asleep and wake up to someone assaulting them and not do anything more then tell them to stop and remain in the same bed afterwards, fall asleep once more, not try to wake a friend up to leave at least. I am not God, and I am not all knowing, so there is little I can do in the true outcome of this, but I hope that maybe I have been able to make my words palpable.

Dear Sir,

I am a Religious Program Specialist 2nd class (RP2) in the United States Navy and I had the privilege of serving with Quinton Bezon while I was stationed onboard the USS FRANK CABLE from 2014-2017. Quinton Bezon was very active, volunteering for community relations projects held on Saturdays sponsored by the Religious Ministry Dept which I was in charge of. Some of the organizations he helped include Tender Shepherd Pre-school at the Guam Lutheran Church. We helped them paint classrooms before the start of their school year. Another one is Guam Wildlife Refuge, there we cleaned trails and debris caused by nature and high traffic by the high number of visitors. At Island Girl Power, we helped them build & maintain their community garden. At the Boys and Girls Club of Pagacho Community Center in Agat, he helped tutor children with their homework, participate in arts and crafts events with them, and participated in sports activities with them. Along with volunteering, he loved the gym, and he loved to work-out. You can always find him there. Whenever we ran into each other on the ship, he always had a positive attitude, and could make my day better just by saying a few words. His attitude is second to none, and even when he might be down, he's always cheering people up. Now is my time to cheer him up. As a man of faith, I know the actions he is accused of are false, because as you can see, they do not fit the person I have described to you. He is a helper, not one who hurts. He enjoyed stopping by the chapel to talk to the Chaplains, myself, and our other RP, RP3 Lester Williams. It did not matter how his day was going, he always wanted to bring joy to those around him. I ask that you help him, his family, his friends, receive more joy, by showing our letters to those who need to see it, so that his family & friends can know that this innocent man, will not have to pay for something he didn't commit. Far too often these days we see men get released years later after being accused of something they are later found not guilty of. My prayer is that this doesn't happen to my friend, my brother, Quinton Bezon.

Blessings,
Marcus M Bonner

To whom it may concern,

Quinton Bezon is a great man and a great friend. He has helped me become a better person in my years of knowing him. Quinton has always been a great role model for me ever since we met.

I do not believe that he did what he Is being accused of. From what I have heard about the trial there seemed to be a complete lack of evidence.

Sincerely,

Zachary James

To hear the news about Quinton was absolutely devastating to me. I truly in my heart don't believe it is true.  Ever since the day I first met him I knew he was an amazing young man.  He was a very thoughtful and caring young man when he started working at Texas Roadhouse in Alliance, Oh.

I had worked there for many years and was quite a bit older.  Watching his work ethic as such a young man was impressive.  He didn't goof off like the other bus boys and get involved with some of their laziness.  He just excelled and picked up the slack for the rest.  That is what caught not only my eye but the eye of almost everyone else there.

This young man was special.  I was a bartender and becoming our barback was an honor.  A promotion if you will.  He was definitely our hardest worker.  I would always check on him and make sure everything was okay and it was one day I can remember the look in his eye like it was yesterday.

His father left his family behind.  Left his mother, his older brother, a younger brother and himself to survive on their own.  Most kids wouldn't have been able to handle it.  Not Quinton.  I can remember asking him how he was doing and seeing that something was bothering him.  After days of saying he was alright, when I knew deep down inside he wasn't.  That is when he told me they didn't have enough money to pay the bills at home.  So he took it upon himself to become the man of the house at 16 or so.  There were times when he cried to me, but never asked why me.

He took it like a man and grew up a lot faster than any kid should have to.  With the holidays coming up and having the heart that he did I'll never forget him picking up all the shifts he could.  When I asked why, it was to pay for Christmas for his little brother who at the time didn't realize what truly was going on with his family.

We at Texas Roadhouse took Quinton in and helped pay bills.  He was such a young caring loving boy that our General Manager even doubled any money that we had raised.  We wanted to do something for him to let him know how special he truly was.  As a young man growing up helping raise your brothers and look out for your mother, he truly was dealt a hand that not many could handle.

He was respectful of every man or woman that he came across.  Yes Ma'am or no sir was always coming out of his mouth.  Quinton was never a violent kid or disrespectful to anyone.  To hear that news that someone accused him of rape truly breaks my heart.  He didn't get in to trouble as a teen or use drugs or alcohol when times were tough.  He dealt with the life that was dealt to him and dealt with it better than most adults.

If I believed for one second this was true I would not be writing this statement.  But after seeing him when he flew home around the holidays, I knew he was telling me the truth.  I asked questions and he answered them all.  He has already been dealt a difficult hand as a young adult and now he is faced with an even tougher hand.

I have two daughters and this subject is not an easy one to deal with, but I hope you realize that Quinton Bezon is innocent of this crime.  I am firm on my stance with predators and their punishment.  But I am also firm that Quinton did not commit this crime and does not deserve this.  I will continue to fight for his freedom and his right to come home to the US.  I hope you take into consideration the type of young man he is and realize his innocence.

Sincerely,
Jason Ganni
